Frequently Asked Questions
What inspired you to combine faith and medical care in your historical fiction?
Faith is the backbone that helps keep us walking through difficult times in life. It is natural that when confronted with life or death decisions, we consider what we believe is the purpose of life, how we should live, and what comes after death.
Are your stories based on real historical events or people?
My stories are based on the real doctors and families that lived these events. While I may draw from historical accounts and include a few real names of doctors, my other characters and situations are fictional. I use my own experiences with modern medicine, along with input from friends, to imagine what happened in the past. Any other similarities are purely coincidental.
How do you choose the time periods and medical settings you write about?
I pick whatever interests me and what I think will make a compelling story.
How do you research historical medical practices and treatments?
Looking into the original Blue Baby surgeries performed at Johns Hopkins was the easiest. There was a fair amount of press coverage, as well as documentation from the hospital and college. Finding used books about these events has become a new hobby of mine.
How do your stories explore the moral challenges faced by caregivers and physicians?
With care. It is important to consider the impact of the things we do–in all areas of life–but especially when we push the boundaries of science and life. There are times we ought to pull back, change course, and make room for people to choose differently. At the end of our daughter’s life, we had to really ask ourselves about quality of life, the value of life, and the implications of a life-saving transplant. Would you choose the same things as us? Maybe. Maybe not. You may even be surprised by what you choose. Let’s talk about it.
